Sichuan University and Monash University 2+2 Chemical Engineering Program

Sichuan University and Monash University 2+2 Chemical Engineering Program

Monash Engineering and Sichuan University have developed and implemented a special program which allows students to combine their undergraduate study with valuable international experience. The program allows students to complete 2 years of study at Sichuan University then study a further two years at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, to complete their Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) degree.

2+2 Linkage Program

Under the Sichuan University and Monash University 2+2 (Chemical) Engineering Program, students will study for the first two years in China. After meeting the English language and academic requirements as well as the Australian visa requirement, the students will transfer to Monash for the third and fourth years of study. On successful completion of the program, students will gain both a Sichuan University degree and a Monash University Bachelor of Engineering degree in the field of Chemical Engineering. If students do not meet the IELTS test scores required by Monash University, students may be able to enroll in an English Language Bridging Program.

Student selection

Students are selected on successful completion of China’s National Entrance Examination and admission to Sichuan University and will study the first two years of the program at Sichuan University.

Curriculum

The subjects taught in China will be fully linked with the Monash third and fourth year of the degree. Thus the curricula will allow students to be granted full credit transfer to Monash University after two years of study at Sichuan University, and will also allow those who are enrolled in the program but are unable to transfer to Monash University for various reasons, to continue and complete their studies at Sichuan University.

Standards and prerequisites

Some lectures will be taught in English at Sichuan University to build an understanding of the specialization in each language. To transfer to Monash, students must achieve an overall average of 70% or higher in the units attempted during the study in all semesters at Sichuan University. The IELTS test score required at Monash is 6.5 overall (at least 6.5 in Reading and Listening, at least 6.0 in Writing and Speaking).

Fees and scholarships

In recognition of the special relationship between Monash Engineering and Sichuan University, high achieving students may be awarded scholarships. The scholarship arrangements shall apply for students who complete their studies at Sichuan University and enrol with Monash Engineering. The scholarship will be equivalent to AU$4000 in the frst year, and AU$2000 in the second year of enrolment at Monash University. Students who receive an average of 75% or higher in their studies at Monash University will receive a further AU$2000 scholarship in the second year of enrolment at Monash University. In addition, students who undertake the Monash University English Language Centre (MUELC) course for ten weeks or more will receive an additional scholarship of AU$500.

Professional recognition

Monash Degrees are recognized by many professional bodies in Australia and internationally. The Chemical Engineering degree is fully accredited with the Institution of Engineers, Australia and with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (UK). This means that as a graduate you can practice as a chemical engineer in many parts of the world without needing to re-qualify.

Chemical Engineering at Monash

Chemical Engineering encompasses a wide range of disciplines including economic design, operation and management of process systems in which materials are changed in composition or physical state. Chemical Engineering has its foundation in chemistry, physics and mathematics; its operations are developed from knowledge provided by these disciplines and by other branches of engineering, applied sciences, biological sciences and economics.

Course structure

Levels three and four of the course are designed around the core topics of mass transfer, heat transfer, separation processes, reaction engineering, chemical thermodynamics, process control, particle technology, process design, sustainability and safety. Practical work forms an essential part of many units, and considerable emphasis is placed on this aspect of the program. Process simulation software is used by students throughout the course. Management studies are introduced in later levels and a greater emphasis is placed on synthesis and design, culminating in each student completing a design project, and another major project in the final level.

Levels 3 and 4 electives

From third year, in addition to core units, students choose to complete electives from one of three streams: biotechnology, sustainable processing or nanotechnology. Each stream involves three specialized units and the opportunity to undertake a final year research project in the chosen area.

Areas of study

 Biotechnology

Biotechnology refers to using biological processes for commercial and industrial applications. Applications include the use of recombinant DNA, the development of micro-organisms and new bioprocessing techniques.

 Sustainable Processing

The application of principles of sustainability and life-cycle assessment for the benefit of the environment. Chemical engineers develop processes for manufacturing existing and new products from renewable raw materials and in a manner to minimize environmental impact.

 Nanotechnology

Literally, engineering at the molecular level. Nanotechnology will let us fabricate an entire new generation of products that are cleaner, stronger, lighter and more precise.

Careers in Chemical Engineering

A degree in Chemical Engineering will prepare students for a wide range of employment and business opportunities, both nationally and internationally. Traditional areas of employment for chemical engineers include the chemical, manufacturing, petrochemical and mining industries. Career opportunities exist in other industries such as computers, electronics, food, clothing and pharmaceuticals. The semiconductor industry hires chemical engineers for the processing of complex polymers, chip fabrication and processing of thin films. Chemical engineers are increasingly playing a major role in the global biotechnology and bioprocessing industries and the emerging nanotechnology industry. A number of consulting companies hire chemical engineers to develop computer software for the simulation and real time optimization of chemical processes, and for evaluating the economic feasibility of industrial projects.

Enhancing the education experience

Monash Engineering students have access to a variety of programs and services that enrich their student experience and provide opportunities to network and get practical research and industry training.

Engineering professional seminar series

Industry partners from a range of engineering disciplines are invited to the Clayton campus to deliver workshops on the engineering profession. These free seminars are an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to network with professional engineers and discover the diversity offered by a career in engineering.

Research experience

Monash Engineering is renowned as a prestigious research faculty and students are offered a range of opportunities to get extra research training whilst studying at undergraduate level. The Summer Research Program for third and fourth year students offers paid research work during the university break for a period of up to 12 weeks. In both cases students work closely with academic staff and there are a range of research projects to choose from.

Industry funded awards and prizes

Strong links with industry enable Monash Engineering to offer current students a wide range of prizes and scholarships. Monash Engineering, with the support of generous sponsorship from companies such as ExxonMobil, BlueScope Steel, Cisco, IMechEUK, Bosch, Transurban, VicRoads and Engineers Australia among many others, awards more than 50 scholarships and prizes annually to current engineering students in a variety of disciplines.

Postgraduate studies

Students from Sichuan University who study for two years at Monash Engineering to complete their undergraduate degree and who wish to continue with Monash Engineering to undertake postgraduate studies are eligible to compete for a Monash Graduate Scholarship and International Postgraduate Research Scholarship, and may be considered for postgraduate research studies for a Masters or PhD, based on academic results achieved. Living and studying in Melbourne

Melbourne is the home, workplace and leisure centre of one of the world’s most harmonious and culturally diverse communities. Melbourne is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. It has a multicultural population of 3.5 million, and is home to people from over 140 nations. Melbourne offers a diverse range of languages and culture. More than 20% of Victoria’s residents and almost 30% of Melbourne’s residents speak a language other than English at home. A combination of this multicultural diversity and a temperate climate has translated into Melbournians love of fne dining, arts and culture, sports and the outdoors, making Melbourne today a welcoming, outgoing and confident city, a refection on the generous and inclusive spirit of its people.

Visa requirements

Students who wish to study in Australia must have a valid student visa.

The Australian Government issues student visas for full-time study on the understanding that the student studies on-campus and has sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses for the duration of time in Australia.

Student visas automatically grant students permission to do paid work while studying (up to 20 hours per week while the course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks).

Visa regulations for studying in Australia are set by the Australian government’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).
