On June 20, 2018, under the convening and presiding of the project leader, Academician Bi Shi, the state-level new engineering teaching reform project seminar of college of Light Industry, Textile & Food Engineering——“Research and Practice on the Construction of New Engineering in Light Industry in China” and “Research and Practice on Transformation and Upgrade of Traditional Textiles in Textiles” and the new undergraduate major "Biomass Science and Engineering" construction expert consultation meeting was successfully held in conference room 209. The external experts attending the conference included Professor Meiyun Zhang, former vice president of Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, Professor Hongzhang Chen from the Institute of Process Control of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Runcang Sun from Beijing Forestry University, and Professor Lihui Chen from Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University. The school's experts included Professor Yunbing Wang, a Thousand person program scholar of the Center for Biomaterials, Professor Qun Sun, School of Life Sciences. Associate Professor Dan Li and Associate Professor Jianmei Li. Professor Xiaohu Liu, deputy professor of the Party Committee of the College of Light Industry,  Textile & Food Engineering, Professor Youjie He, dean of the college, Professor Biyu Peng, deputy director of teaching, and related teachers of the Department of Biomass and Leather participated in the seminar.

Academician Bi Shi first introduced the research ideas of the new engineering education reform project and the background of the new professional construction. Academician Shi pointed out that after long-term scientific research and professional development, traditional engineering majors must follow the path of new engineering construction, take the path of multidisciplinary integration, actively expand professional connotation, and actively adapt to the new requirements for talent training in the new era of new economy, new industries, new formats and new models. Academician Shi proposes to rely on the first-level disciplines of “Light Industry Technology and Engineering” (including the secondary disciplines "Biomass Chemistry and Engineering" and "Leather Chemistry and Engineering") and the undergraduate major “Light Chemical Engineering” of college of Light Industry, Textile & Food Engineering, integrate scientific research and talent cultivation of quality resources in the field of biomass science and engineering among college of Light Industry, Textile & Food Engineering, college of Chemistry, college of Life Sciences and national center for Biomedical Materials Engineering Technology. The construction of a new specialty of “Biomass Science and Engineering” through the deep integration of disciplines is an important path to promote the construction of new light engineering in China and accelerate the upgrading and upgrading of related traditional professions. Professor Biyu Peng, the deputy director of teaching, further elaborated on the new professional name, professional connotation and orientation, training objectives, training programs and curriculum system. Afterwards, the experts from the conference combined their own academic background and years of teaching, research and industry experience to carry out heated discussions on some key issues of the new professional construction, and put forward many constructive opinions and suggestions.

The participating experts unanimously agreed and supported the establishment of a new undergraduate major in “Biomass Science and Engineering”, arguing that the establishment and training programs of the new profession can adapt to the needs of the new biomass science and engineering related professionals in the light industry under the new situation ,and have great talent development prospects.
