In the early 21st century, leather discipline of Sichuan University (SCU) began to pay close attention to thetalents cultivationand scientific research in the field of synthetic leather, setting upsynthetic leather laboratoryheaded by Professor Fan Haojun, which pioneered cleaner production technology of synthetic leather in China. During the past decade, the laboratory has been actively promoting the development and industrialization of advanced cleaner production technology, and cultivating dozens of high-level technical talents and distinguished alumni. To further take theinterdisciplinary advantages ofleather and polymer science of SCU (both key subjects of “211 Project” and “985 Project”), Synthetic Leather ResearchCenterwas established in May 2011, which was initiated by Prof. Shi Bi(Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences)and authorized by President Xie Heping (Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences).The Centerboasts excellent faculty and staff, including professors, doctoral supervisors, associate professors, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral and master students. Research fields distinctive to the Center include, but are not limited to, cleaner production key materials of artificial/synthetic leather, leading-edge (such as water-resin based, solvent-free, low energy, ecological and high-performance) artificial/synthetic leathermanufacturing technology, cleaner production technology of microfiber synthetic leather, and environmental friendly plasticizer.
