Deriving from leather department in Yenching University in 1920 and built in 1952, Leather Chemistry & Engineering department of our college began to enroll postgraduate students in 1957. Master’s and doctorate’s degree authorization point was authorized at 1982 and 1986, respectively. Leather Chemistry & Engineering department was affirmed as national key discipline and national “211 Project” Key Constructive Discipline at 1988 and 1998, respectively. Its laboratory was listed as National Technical Laboratory and Ministry of Education Key Laboratory at 1993 and 2000. There were 20 sets of advanced equipment, 150 sets of specialized equipment whose total value reached to 10 million Yuan. The main research directions include leather chemistry, animal albumen chemistry and histology, theory of environment friendly and technology of clean leather-making, resource recycling of leather waste, leather chemical, technology of analysis and measurement in leather-making, etc. Many national major fundamental research programs containing “863 Project”, “973 Project” and Natural Science Fund of China have been completed. And these experiences also train a large number of high-quality professionals for leather industry. For the basic research and achievements transformation between scientific and technological, the effect was indispensable.
